Driver Info

We operate somewhat differently from other drive away companies. We deliver only for Thomas and their distributors, and do not use drivers to go from one location to another location.

  • All of our drivers leave from High Point, deliver to the designated location, then return back to High Point.
  • All of our drivers are DOT qualified, including having a CDL license, in addition to having random drug testing.
  • We mandate, as does DOT, that the drivers log their trips, and sleep in a hotel nightly and follow all DOT guidelines. We do not allow drivers to sleep on the buses. This helps to ensure that all buses are delivered in a safe and accident free manner.
  • QRT, Inc. pays for all expenses incurred that are related to the bus delivery.
  • Drivers are paid immediately upon delivery. Pay is based on mileage.
  • All drivers are contract laborers.
  • QRT provides the transportation back to High Point. (Airfare or van)

CONTRACT DRIVER PROCEDURES

Dispatch:
  • Please call the office between 10:00 a.m. and Noon Monday thru Friday, if you are available for a trip the following day.  If you are out on a trip, leaders are asked to call in the names of people in their group who are interested in going out the next day.  If we do not hear from you, we will assume that you are not available.  If for some reason there is not anyone in the office to answer your call, please leave your name and availability on the voicemail and we will call you back if a trip is available.

Personal Vehicle Parking:
  • Arrive at the staging facility (Speedway Fuel Station) at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled meeting time 5:45AM. The gravel parking lot at the back of the store is our designated parking area for all driver vehicles.  This area has video surveillance monitoring; however, QRT, Inc. is not responsible for any break-ins, thefts or vandalism.  There is no charge for parking; however, it is at your own discretion.  You will be brought back to this parking lot after each trip. (either by shuttle or by van)
  • Speedway address:  801 West Fairfield Road High Point, N.C. 27262
  • You will be assigned a parking pass to place on the dash of your vehicle. This pass must be displayed at all times. Vehicles not displaying the QRT, Inc. pass may be towed.

When picking up your bus at Thomas or outside vendor, the following procedure should be followed:
  • Verify that the body number and order number on your paperwork actually matches the unit that you are on.
  • Complete your pre-trip inspection – this includes checking your lights, oil, water, tires and completing the vehicle acceptance form that is in the bus.
  • Set your mirrors PRIOR to moving the bus.
  • All drivers are required to have a working CB radio and antenna, failure to do so will result in one of the following two options:
  1. Loan a radio from QRT, your check will be withheld, a loaner fee of $25.00 will be deducted and a new check will be reissued upon your return.
  2. If you opt out of using the loaner radio, your trip will be canceled and you will be sent home. NO EXCEPTIONS!
  • Line up at the front gate in an orderly fashion. Only 1 person in the gate office at a time.
When you get to Speedway for fuel:
  • Check the fuel nozzle BEFORE turning on pump.  We have had fuel spills because these nozzles have not been checked prior to turning on the pump.
  • Identify fuel type and the location of your fuel tank while conducting your pre-trip inspection.
  • Wait on your lead driver to communicate when it is time to go over for fuel from the Thomas lot.
  • All drivers need to be alert for traffic and watch for directions from the QRT manager when entering Speedway for fueling.
  • After fueling, do not hang up the pump! The driver behind you will piggyback off of the same pump.
  • All drivers are required to write down current fuel mileage, fuel location (city, state)/ fuel totals and accurately keep a log of every fuel stop. No exceptions.
  • After fueling, be sure to let a QRT manager know that your bus is finished fueling. Never leave your bus unattended for any reason!
  • Always check your bus for leaks PRIOR to leaving Speedway.
When you are ready to leave:
  • LEADERS: Before departure, make sure that ALL drivers are on their buses and ready to go. (This includes log books being current)
  • LEADERS: FOR CANADIAN TRIPS: VERIFY THAT EXPORT PAPERWORK MATCHES THE UNITS THAT ARE IN YOUR GROUP BEFORE LEAVING HIGH POINT!
  • DO NOT EXIT Speedway onto Surrett using any other driveway other than the one in the MIDDLE! (See Vic if you have any questions)
While on the Road:
  • Keep a safe following distance- At least 1 bus length or more for every 10 MPH traveling from the vehicle in front of you.
  • DO NOT separate from the group. The order that you leave the staging area in is the order that you should stay in unless, your bus develops a problem and the leader wants you behind him/her so that he/she can keep a check on your bus.
  • Help other group members in and out of traffic. This is why you have a CB radio. If you see a hazard in the road, let others know.
  • Drive Courteously!
  • Oil, Water and Tires should be checked intermittently during the day.
  • When damage to a unit occurs, find a safe location and contact Vic, Qurt or Jonathan IMMEDIATELY! Do NOT continue driving until a manager has been notified!
  • QRT, INC. does not allow phone use or texting while your vehicle is moving. You must be stopped before cell phone/texting is allowed! Hands free devices/headsets are permitted in states that allow.  You are responsible for being aware of all state laws.
  • NO SMOKING, ALCOHOL OR GUNS/WEAPONS ALLOWED ON BUSES! (NO EXCEPTIONS!)
  • NO PASSENGERS ALLOWED ON BUSES!
When you get to the Hotel:
  • Park in an area where the buses are not at risk for getting damaged.
  • Watch for each other while backing or parking. If you have to back up a bus, have someone watch for you!!  (We have more buses damaged due to backing and careless mistakes)
  • Absolutely no one is to take a bus to the store or a restaurant. Your bus is to be parked at the hotel, and it should remain PARKED until you are leaving the next morning!
Upon Delivery:
  • Check your oil, water and tires.
  • Please be courteous and do NOT demand anything! (I.e. quick check-in, ride to airport, etc.)
  • Please be presentable (I.e. clean clothes, hair combed, etc.) You are representing QRT, Thomas Built Bus, The Dealer and yourself. In most cases the only personal contact that is made with that customer is YOU!
  • Be sure to note anything that is wrong with the bus on the Manifest.
  • Clean all trash out of your bus PRIOR to delivery!
  • Close all windows and doors to keep out dust and water.
  • Help the leader unhook tow vehicle and make sure that all QRT equipment is accounted for and placed back in the van.
  • All wiring harnesses should be handled with care. Do NOT pull on wires when unplugging connections. This will damage the harness.
  • DO NOT FORGET YOUR TAG!!! If you lose a tag, there will be a $150.00 charge to any driver for this tag replacement!
  • CANADIAN DELIVERIES: Leave the ORIGINAL Canadian paperwork with the ORIGINAL PARS number with the dealer.  You are to return with your paperwork: one copy of the STAMPED original.  There is a $1,000.00 fine if we are audited and do not have this paperwork!!
Driving Vans and Rentals:
  • NO SPEEDING AT ANY TIME IN BUSES/VANS/CARS OR RENTAL CARS!
  • NO ALCOHOL ALLOWED IN BUSES/VANS/CARS OR RENTAL CARS.

  • Notify a QRT MGR if you were unable to get fuel.
  • Clean ALL trash out of the vans! (This includes everyone in the group, not just the leader!) It is your responsibility to pick up after yourselves! QRT will take care of the outside of the van.
Breakdown Procedure:
  • Breakdowns are handled on an individual basis. Depending on the location of the breakdown, the breakdown cause, etc. the breakdown options will be discussed with the driver/leader.
  • Drivers are normally compensated to the breakdown location. QRT, Inc.  will get the driver back to High Point using the most economical and time efficient mode of transportation.

In the event of a necessary layover for repair, etc. QRT, Inc. will discuss all options with the driver to ensure that all changes are agreeable with driver of the broken-down vehicle.
